Kolhapur News: In a harrowing case that has shocked the nation, the Bombay High Court upheld the death sentence for Sunil Kuchkoravi, who brutally murdered his mother, Yallama Rama Kuchkoravi, on August 28, 2017. The court described this as a case of cannibalism, stating that the severity of the crime places it in the “rarest of rare” category.
The bench, consisting of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Prithviraj Chavan, emphasized that the evidence clearly demonstrated the gruesome nature of the crime. Not only did Kuchkoravi take his mother’s life, but he also dismembered her body and cooked some of her organs—her brain, heart, liver, and kidneys—before consuming them. The court remarked, “This is a case of cannibalism. The accused showed no signs of remorse and is unlikely to be rehabilitated.”
The judges pointed out the inherent danger of granting Kuchkoravi life imprisonment, cautioning that he might commit similar atrocities even while incarcerated. “If he is sentenced to life, there is a possibility that he could repeat this crime in prison,” they stated during the proceedings.
According to the prosecution, the motive behind this horrific act stemmed from a financial dispute; the mother refused to give her son money for alcohol. The trial court in Kolhapur had sentenced Kuchkoravi to death in 2021, declaring the case a shocking crime that disturbed societal consciousness.
Kuchkoravi is currently held in Yerwada Jail in Pune and had appealed his conviction and sentence, but the High Court has firmly dismissed his plea, reinforcing the severity of his actions and the chilling nature of this case.
